Chips & Bits
Looking for a way to make more money with Transport Tycoon Deluxe? In this page I will discuss some of my own strategies and cheats, but I will also publish yours. If you want to add them: mail info@tycoongames.net

Strategies

  • When a manufacturer offers you a new vehicle to test and you're planning for using it in the near future always answer yes! Even if you don't use the vehicle within the one year testing period you're still getting some benefit because it's maximum reliability is higher.
  • Try to use only one factory or steel mill to bring stuff to. Even when the distance is very long, like from one side of the map to the other one, it's very handy if you can pick up the goods or steel from one location.
  • Try to let your trains travel a long distance, it's much more profitable when your goods are travelling a long way then when the destination is 5 blocks away.
  • Don't let your trains climb too much or even well: don't let them climb at all. It's much faster if they go around an object then when you let them go under it.
  • To dramatically decrease the cost of building in farmland, simply plant trees first in all squares you want to build. (by Matt Grice)
  • An addendum to the sabotage trick of attaching a competitor's "back door" to his station. This seems to only work with multiple-track stations which have signals. If your competition is mostly using single-track stations, you can sometimes connect the stations from multiple lines together using the same trick - running track from the back of one station to the back of another line's depot and vice versa. This has the unique effect of letting only one of the trains run at a given time - the other will be stuck in the depot, once it enters. When the other train enters the depot, the first train runs again. The more lines you connect this way, the more havoc you wreak. (by Nicholas D Cassavaugh)

Cheating using the Scenario Editor

  • It's possible to cheat using the Scenario Editor, here's how. I assume you have started Transport Tycoon Deluxe from MS-DOS, and know how to work with this operating system.
  • Download my Savegame Reader™ from the Download Area, and unzip it to a directory in your path.
  • Save your game on the hard-disk, and exit Transport Tycoon Deluxe.
  • Go to the directory where you have saved the game.
  • Type the following to find out which savegame is the one you want to cheat with:
    SR *.SV1
  • Rename the extension to SV0 (for scenarios) and start Transport Tycoon Deluxe again.
  • Click on "Create Scenario" and Load the savegame you have just renamed to a scenario.

You got to keep in mind that you are still playing the game. Your trains will still make money just like all the other vehicles. Everything you build or demolish will cost you the same amount of money as it used to. Some things are for free and some things can be done which cannot in the game. I will discuss both here:

  • Industry Generation and deleting an industry are for free!
    Industry GenerationLand Area Information
  • Town Generation and expanding a town are for free!
    Town Generation
  • Deleting a town is for free, but... your ratings will drop because you're removing the houses, when a few houses are removed your ratings are too low to remove something more and all the other houses will be owned by the neighbour Local authorities. The only thing that is gone are the roads!
  • Demolishing a Town Bridge isn't for free but can be done!
    Land Area Information
  • Demolishing Town Roads isn't for free but can be done!
    Land Area Information

The story continues...

  • When you're done cheating all the way save your scenario.
  • Go to the directory where you have saved the scenario.
  • Type the following to find out which scenario is the one you have just been cheating with:
    SR *.SV0
  • Rename the extension back to SV1 (for savegames) and start Transport Tycoon Deluxe again.
  • Load the savegame and play!

Cheating when the computer player goes bankrupt

"Make Millions of Dollars the dishonest way" (by Mike Metcalf)

Step 1:
When a company is about to go bankrupt and asks you if you would like to purchase the company, say "No".
Step 2:
Open up that company's window and purchase 75% of their stock. DO NOT CLOSE THAT WINDOW!
Step 3:
Move the window off to the side of the screen and forget about it for 3 months of game time. The computer player will be declared bankrupt, but the displayed value of the company in the STILL OPEN company window will be in the millions!
Step 4:
Sell the 75% of the company you own and you'll make a bundle!
Warning!!!
This has crashed my system on several occasions! SAVE YOUR GAME BEFORE THE THREE MONTH MARK IS UP!!!
